Acquiring Out of Clan Disciplines follows the guidelines below:
Additional Discipline Limit
Each character may learn three(3) additional Disciplines outside of their three In-Clan Disciplines. This limitation can increase based upon your character's generation.
Clan Specific Disciplines
To preserve the flavor and exclusivity of the more unique disciplines in the game, each character may only have one(1) Clan-Specific, or Specialty, discipline. Once your character has acquired their first dot in a Specialty or Clan Specific discipline, they cannot learn any additional disciplines of this category.
Example: William is a Brujah, and his In-Clan disciplines are Celerity, Potence, and Presence. William has found some potentially lethal blackmail on a Tzimisce rival, Reinhardt, and and uses this to pressure Reinhardt into teaching him Vicissitude. William cannot learn any other specialty or Clan-Specific discipline once he has obtained his first dot in Vicissitude. On the contrary, Helga is a Gangrel, with the In-Clan disciplines of Animalism, Protean, and Fortitude. Helga cannot learn any additional specialty disciplines, as Protean is on her In-Clan discipline list.
Specialty Disciplines: Chimestry, Dementation, Necromancy, Obtenebration, Protean, Quietus, Serpentis, Thaumaturgy, Vicissitude. Any specialty disciplines from a clan that is not currently approved for play also falls into this category.
Learning Out of Clan Disciplines
Any character that wishes to learn an out of clan Discipline must find an IC instructor of that discipline. The instructor must have the Disipline in question as an In-Clan discipline to qualify as an instructor.
Example: William the Brujah has learned Obfuscate during his travels. Helga the Gangrel wishes to learn Obfuscate as well. William cannot teach her Obfuscate, since the Brujah In-Clan Disciplines are Celerity, Potence, and Presence.
V20 Dark Ages indicates that a Cainite may develop Celerity, Potence, and Fortitude without an instructor. We will not be using this. Characters developing disciplines outside of their In-Clan disiplines will instead follow the system above.
Additional Discipline Limit

- 7th Generation may have 4 Additional Disciplines
- 6th Generation may have 5 Additional Disciplines
- 5th Generation may have 6 Additional Disciplines
